Our Approach
Our Approach:
At The Mbwakawen Harambee Collective, we believe in learning from the land and sharing that knowledge with the community. By blending Native and African American ecological wisdom with modern practices, we create spaces for restoration, growth, and connection. Our approach is centered on empowerment—through hands-on experiences in gardening, herbal medicine, and ecological restoration, we equip individuals with the tools to care for the earth and each other. We cultivate this learning through school partnerships, educator programs, and immersive workshops, fostering a culture of environmental respect, unity, and shared responsibility.

Restoration
We learn about Native and African American Traditional Ecological knowledge and apply this knowledge to our gardening and restoration projects in Chicago, Illinois and Pawhuska, Oklahoma.

Nature Based Cultural Programming
We practice nature based arts that celebrate African American and Native heritage and facilitate community based programming.
- Face Jug Workshop
- Storytelling Events
- Native Hand Drum Making Workshop
- Nature Walks and Photography

Educate
Everything we learn is poured back into the community. We believe in the power of education and hands-on experiences to inspire change. Through partnerships with schools, summer programs, and educators, we engage the next generation in the teachings of traditional ecological knowledge.
We offer garden and restoration site tours, where visitors can explore sustainable practices in action, and facilitate workshops that provide practical skills in gardening, herbal medicine, and restoration.
